PTOLEMY II

This Ptolemy is distinguished from his father by his sobriquet ‘Philadelphos’. (The first Ptolemy is sometimes known as Ptolemy I Soter – the Saviour – though whom or what he saved is unclear.) The ‘brotherly love’ implied by the name Philadelphos was not extended to Ptolemy II’s elder brother, who left Egypt when it became clear that he would not inherit the throne. However, this love was certainly extended to Ptolemy’s sister Arsinoe II, whom he married after he repudiated his first wife, Arsinoe I, who was the daughter of the king of Macedon and the mother of his successor, Ptolemy III. As well as with his sister, Ptolemy enjoyed liaisons with a vast number of concubines and courtesans, giving his court a well-deserved reputation for moral decadence.
